Overview of Best Practices Day 2011

Another record-breaking Best Practices Day!

Best Practices Day 2011 brought together more than 270 healthcare providers, managers, researchers and policy makers at the Chestnut Conference Centre for yet another successful day of networking, sharing and learning from our peers across the province. We were particularly pleased that the 11th year of Best Practices Day had a record number of abstract submissions and a record number of participants!

For your convenience, conference presentations are now available.

Going Beyond the Restoration of Function: A Reality Check

The day began with a personal and meaningful ‘reality check' by Dr. Alex Jadad, whose many roles include the Canada Research Chair in eHealth Innovation. Dr. Jadad delivered a thought-provoking talk on maximizing the value of our healthcare system and pushing beyond the traditional ‘restoration of function'. Dr. Jadad stimulated a great deal of discussion and garnered much praise for his passion and refreshing perspective.

An Opportunity to Learn from Top Healthcare Leaders

We were also fortunate to bring together the expertise of four top healthcare leaders to share their strategies and insights. These sessions were very well received and if anything, participants reported that they wished they could have attended more than one!

  • Mimi Lowi-Young, CEO of the Central West LHIN and Chair of the ALC-Rehab/CCC Expert Panel;
  • Paula Blackstien-Hirsch, Executive Director of the Centre for Healthcare Quality Improvement;
  • Dr. Colin Preyra, Director of the Canadian Health Services Research Group and Affiliate Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences; and
  • Dr. Peter Nord, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Providence Healthcare.

A Patient and Provider's Experience

The day wrapped up with a thoughtful consumer keynote delivered by Greg Noack, a rehabilitation therapist at Toronto Rehab, who survived an assault in 1996. Greg's remarkable rehabilitation and transition from patient to provider was inspiring and countless participants expressed their appreciation for his informative, compassionate and humbling story.

We hope you enjoyed the conference and we look forward to seeing you at Best Practices Day 2012!
