| Spotlight On Our MembersBridgepoint recognized for leadership in patient safety educationBridgepoint Health has won a national award for its commitment to promoting and improving patient safety within the hospital. The Canadian Patient Safety Institute recently awarded the hospital the newly established Innovations in Patient Safety Education Award. The award recognizes Bridgepoint’s achievements in implementing the Patient Safety Education Program (PSEP). This program was designed by Northwestern University as a patient safety approach that could be taught to staff in hospitals using a train-the-trainer model. Bridgepoint Health is the first hospital in Canada to adopt the program and begin training its staff. Currently, 43 staff members representing each department in the hospital are going through PSEP. “This initial group will use the knowledge and skills learned through the program to assess safety issues within their areas and to develop ways to improve so that patient safety is made a priority,” says Kate Wilkinson, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Bridgepoint Health. “Specific areas of focus include cleaning equipment, organization of medication rooms, team communication and injury prevention.” For more information, please contact Kate Wilkinson, KWilkinson@bridgepointhealth.ca December 5, 2011 Central West CCAC launches Home Independence ProgramThe Central West CCAC recently launched a new short-term, home-based early intervention program. The program, based on best practice programs in the United Kingdom and Australia, is designed primarily for adults 75 years of age and older who have demonstrated a recent decline in their ability to perform activities of daily living. The program uses a preventative model of care to improve clients’ ability to conduct self care, increase independence, reduce falls, minimize the need for ongoing home care services and avoid hospital admissions. Personal support workers provide the majority of care under the guidance of rehabilitation professionals.
